I remember the days before what happened. I remember when I saw her smile. His rough hands patting me on the shoulder, praising my good work. They had helped me adjust to this broken paradise. Days were better.
I had seen the city with them a thousand times. Through the glass twenty stories high as we worked, she was a waitress, he was a bartender, and I was a cook. We worked on the restaurant on the top floor, catering to the rich and the privileged. Late into the evenings we would return to our home in Moresby. To a humble home.
