I didn't get it the first time too, But I have some understadning to it. Yes Yerema is the key to the virus her father and few other natives had the virus but it stayed dormant. Maybe, One of the viruses in one of the natives awakened and then turned its host into a zombie, and started attacking the other natives, infecting them further, and then the natives moved onto the civilazation and started doing it that way, and thats how it might have happened. Yerema is just the key to having another outbreak somewhere esle, that was why Charon brought her along in the chopper, so he could cause havco in the other states.

If they already have the virus but is dormant it can suddenly awaken and break all immunity and thats how a human can get infected. Like whites case he got bit but he didnt turn right away cause he was immune. but when he injected himself with the virus vaccine it broke his immunity causing him to turn quickly. and maybe from past generations the natives were being born with the vrius inside them but dormant, and it could suddenly awaken.

The virus origanlly must have came from Kuru, a type of prion that comes from the protein from our brains(gross.), So tribes that practice Cannabilism got this prion when they ate the brains of their victims, and sometimes the symptoms took years to show up, or it wouln't show up at all, but Kuru caused the person to slow lose their ability to walk straight, and in severe cases to become crazy. So in dead island they based the virus off of kuru but, more mutated and severe. So Ope's tribe ate brains of other people and contrated the virus, but then the virus became more mutated thanks to the scientists wanting to research more on Kuru, and created the zombies. Does it make sense now?
