    Dead Island Novelization

I wanted to try my hand at writing a novelization of the game. Just for fun. I know there's a book out already, but it's quite different from the game, and I've wanted to do this for some time.

Anyway, I hope you all give me some feedback on this. It's the first chapter, so it's not very interesting, but I tried.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Calm Before The Storm

Straightening her tie in the bathroom mirror, Xian Mei heaved a deflated sigh, examining her reflection with careful scrutiny. Dark circles marred her tired features, masked beneath a layer of fading make-up. Strands of unkempt hair curled behind her ear, flat and lifeless in the humid island heat.

Running a hand down the length of her uniform, she smoothed a crease in the fold of her skirt, stooping to pluck a piece of lint that clung to the hem of her stocking. Returning her belt to it's original position, she tugged at the collar of her shirt, fastening a button that had come loose during the course of the day.

Placing a hand to her temple, she grimaced through the dull ache that pulsed beneath her fingertips, beating in time with the heavy bass of a nearby speaker. Noisy crowds of excited guests screamed their pleasure in small tremors that moved the floor beneath her, pinching at her toes like tenacious claws.

It had been a long day, and though Xian wished she could bask in the luxury of Banoi island's Royal Palms Resort, her position as hotel receptionist denied her any such pleasure, forced to watch others enjoy the sandy beach and crystalline ocean that dominated the resort's surrounding area.

Once, She thought to herself, Just once, I'd like to wake up to an empty hotel.

Overcome with a lingering lethargy, the worn out clerk immersed her hands in the cooling flow of cold water, rinsing off a fresh layer of accumulated sweat. Even at night, the stifling heat was too much to bare, dousing her skin in a hazy sheen of perspiration that soiled every inch of her body.

Grabbing a paper towel, she gingerly dried her damp hands, discarding the now crumpled paper in a nearby bin. Wiping the remaining dew on her knee length skirt, she gave her reflection one final glance, disapproval etched on her soft features, before heading towards the bathroom door.

As she reached the polished oak, a sudden force sent the door crashing into her slender frame, knocking her back and causing a momentary loss of momentum. Pinwheeling wildly, Xian managed to regain enough composure to remain upright, gripping the wall in a bid to prevent her legs from buckling.

Blinking through a cloud of confusion, Xian struggled to make sense of the situation, eyes roving the spacious room in a nauseating flurry of motion. Straining through the dull ache, her eyes landed on the crumpled figure of a bikini clad woman sprawled across the floor. Blood pooling from beneath her lifeless body.

Panic set, and she struggled to remember her basic first aid training, staring vacantly at the copious sea of red. There was so much of it, and Xian feared that moving the patient would prove risky. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she pushed herself from the wall, edging towards the injured woman.

'Miss,' She dropped to her knees, hands shaking. 'Are you alright?'

Brushing a hand against the woman's mottled forehead, Xian recoiled with a gasp, cupping her hand protectively against her chest. Ice cold flesh burned her skin, haggard and grey, rough to the touch. Blank eyes watched her, glazed and white, like she was possessed by some hideous demon.

'M-Miss?' She stammered, fighting back the ensuing wave of nausea. Her stomach was tangled in a painful knot and the colour had drained from her face. Eyes wide, she got to her feet, retreating from the ugly crimson puddle.

What should I do? She asked herself, trembling with fear. The woman is dead.

'What you need them for? You got some kind of condition?'

That was really good. And I agree with Magnum, don't say Xian Mei every time. When it says that, it sounds like that is her "first" name. It would be like her full name is Xian Mei Lastname.

    but that was great.

Thank you all so much. I really appreciate your feedback. Hopefully it will help me improve my writing.

As for Xian Mei, I didn't know whether that was her first name or her full name. I won't make that mistake again. I've edited it now, just for future reference.

I know I shouldn't double post, but I wanted my chapters seperate from my comments. If you don't want me doing this, then I apologize.
Here's the second chapter. Please feel free to comment.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    A Glass Half Full

'Hey barkeep, gimme another beer.' Logan Carter slumped forward, pushing through an array of empty shot glasses, 'Make it a strong one, my knee's starting to cramp.'

Turning to face his impatient customer, the tall man waltzed over to where Logan sat, his black, button down vest looking odd on his elongated body. Voice tired, he watched as the tipsy man swayed back and forth, struggling to keep his balance.

'Sir, don't you think you've had enough?' The man enquired, reaching for Logan when he fell back, 'Perhaps you should go and lie down?'

Slapping away the outstretched hand, Logan snapped, 'I don't want to lie down, I want a f*cking beer!'

'Sir, I really think you should get some rest. You're becoming agitated.'

'Of course I'm agitated,' He bawled, pounding the counter with his fist. 'You won't give me a f*cking drink.'

Taking note of the burly security guard standing in the corner, Logan gripped the handrail surrounding the bar, distributing his weight so as not to fall. Lowering his voice to a hushed slur, he leaned in close, inhaling the musty aftershave coating the barkeep's neck.

'Look,' He hissed, spittle landing inches from the tall man's face. 'I let a blood drive use my name, my name, just to win an all-expenses-paid trip to this piece of crap island. Now give me a goddamned drink!'

Removing Logan's hand from his collar, the bartender stole a glance at the suspicious guard, now watching the scene unfold, 'Sir, if you don't leave now, I'm going to call security.'

Frustrated, Logan dropped the much taller man, raising his hands apologetically. He didn't mix well with alcohol, alochol didn't mix well with authority, and since the incident that destroyed his football career, Logan hadn't mixed well with others.

'Okay, okay,' Adopting a submissive stance, he slowly backed away. 'There ain't no need to call nobody. I'll leave, right after I take a leak.'

Stumbling through the nearby crowd of excited dancers, the ex-football star struggled to see through his double vision, growing dizzy with the bright flash of strobe lights that lit up the otherwise dark room. Clumsily tripping over his own foot, he crashed into a solitary dancer, her sour face scowling in response.

Though she managed to stay upright, Logan somehow found himself on the floor, gazing into the deep brown eyes of a very irate black woman. Her purple dress paid compliment to her attractive figure, and despite her apparent mood, Logan couldn't help but stare at the approaching curve of her hips.

'You're the second man to bump into me tonight,' Her harsh voice was like sandpaper, erecting dozens of tiny goosebumps along her skin. 'Why don't you watch where you're bloody well going?'

'Gee, I'm sorry,' He mocked, clambering to his feet. 'I didn't realize you were on your period.'

A sharp pain shot through his jaw, and before he had time to react, Logan found himself hurtling across the room, back hitting the far wall with a painful crunch. Slumping in agony, he watched the woman's dark silhouette disappear into the crowd, feeling humilated and ashamed that he was bested by a girl.

'S*it,' He breathed, rubbing his arched back with a pained grimace. A hint of iron hit his tongue, and he cursed again, feeling an open gash where he bit his tongue.

A thick hand grabbed his shoulder, easing him to a stand. Blinking at the broad shouldered security officer, Logan flashed him a toothy grin, revealing his blood stained teeth with reckless abandon. Shaking his head, the large man led him towards the exit, twitching when Logan dripped blood on his crisp white shirt.

'I'm not ready to leave yet,' He garbled incoherantly, spitting out blood. 'I need to take a leak. Where's the bathroom?'

'You can use the toilet in your suite,' Was the guard's only reply.

'Do you know who I am?' Logan tried to stand up straight, wincing when his back cracked. 'I'm Logan Carter, former star of the NFL, you can't treat me this way.'

Without so much as a second glance, the security guard laughed, 'You're a drunk, I've seen tons of 'em far more threatening than you.'

With a gentle shove, the man pushed Logan in the elevator. Not bothering to escort him to his room, he simply pushed a button and watched the doors close, leaving Logan to fend for himself. Grumbling through the silence, Logan fumbled for his room key, dropping it twice before finally getting a good grip.

It took him a while to get the key inside the lock, and when he finally opened the door, Logan found was too tired to change, deciding to sleep in his current choice of wardrobe. Having only suceeded in removing his shoes, the withered man clambered into bed, allowing oblivion to consume him.
