Just bought DI. Would have got it so long ago but I had other responsibilities. Anyway, any tips for a newbie getting to know the game?

I just played the game, love the story, love the gameplay, love the graphics, love the zombies (yeah, i know...), love everything about it! Eeh...Getting to know the game...That's a bit of a vague question...
Just an advice: if you happen to discover a skull, pick it up...If someone offers you, or you find a weapon which name isn't white, but in another color, don't hesitate to pick it up...Don't know about the green ones though...They're pretty common...

Anyways, have fun with Dead Island!

Advice? Just have fun with the game. You will pick up on tips and tricks on your own. I think that the best part about a new game is discovering everything for yourself. Don't just go on the internet and look up how to kill thugs and rams, but figure it out on your own and you will have a much better gaming experience.
