So I've read many posts and can't seem to find the answer to any of my questions. I'm playing as Sam B. and wanted to know which skills in his skill tree are preferred. I know eventually you'll earn enough points to get them all but which should you start out with? Also. which weapons work best with him? I like using bats and machetes but are there any weapons I should look to pick? And which mods are best for which weapons for him?

well I guess you're right...lol. You need 99 skill points and the max level is what like 60, 69? What do you mean playing style? And yes I'd prefer to get good items. And I plan on doing this first one solo. How does fury work?
There is no correct or incorrect combination for Sam B's skills. The skills are available depending on how you like to play the game and what YOU value as an important attribute.
I would encourage that you "buy" any skill which increases his stamina and any skill which increases the amount or the percentage of money & weapons you find.
Let's first look at his Fury:
Obviously unlocking this first skill allows Sam B to use his fury which is a series of devastating punches. The next set of skills has three different options in which you must chose what you value based on how you're most comfortable playing the game. While Sam B does specialize in blunt weapons if you personally use blunt weapons a lot such as bats, tongfas, or kanabos then I would encourage you to increase that skill. If you value your health over how quickly you gain Fury you can select either of those options. This is the method for all of the trees.
Some of the skills will have zero appeal to you but you must fully unlock at least one skill in each of the tiers to move down to the next skill. This is the same with all of the characters, especially with Logan.
Understanding what you personally value in this game (money, types of weapons, health, offensive attacks, defensive strategy) and the style you're most comfortable playing is what you should chose when unlocking skills for each player.
Yes, every player has a specialty skill but it is not crucial to unlock or even enhance that particular skill if it does not appeal to how you play the game. Each character is given a diverse enough range of skills that any character who uses sharp weapons (Xian) can still be played by a person who prefers blunt weapons or guns.
True, my preference was to spend the least amount(9 skill points) on fury to get to have the longest time just in case, but I weighed heavily on the battle tree (35 skill points I believe), and valued quite a few of the survival skills(with roughly 24 points) the survival tree on sam b is good if you don't want to weigh on med kits, at level 3 his regeneration skill can fill his health bar fully in 5 mins, that's if it ever hit 0, but it doesn't it also increases the amount of health regained when recovering from critical, nearly 1/3 slightly more than the other characters. And with his battle skills increasing damage with blunt weapons and the maintenance skills a blunt weapon is a force to be reckoned with in his hands. At top level his damage with blunt weapons can nearly double the base amount with the weapon upgraded.

ok so that covers the skill trees, but as far as weapons go are any better than others, is there a progession? I get that a lvl 30 is better than lvl 15 but does flimsy, feeble, or dependable matter? When is a good time to upgrade them?
Prefixes are used to describe the randomly spawned weapons in Dead Island. In naming a weapon, like in other games, Dead Island starts with a core item, (ie. Hammer, Paddle, Cleaver), then adds specific adjectives (prefixes) that describe characteristics unique to that weapon.
For example, melee weapons have four characteristics, damage, force, durability, and handling. If the game spawns a Hammer with below average durability, it would give the hammer the Frail prefix, making it a "Frail Hammer," while if it had below average force, it would be a "Feeble Hammer." taken from dead island wiki
