Im not sure if someone has mentioned this or not but SamB is a blunt weapon expert so he should mainly use those (e.g hammers, bats and brass knuckles) but it is up to you on what weapon you use incase people tell you different.
Wene covered most of it but I'd just like to add a little more.
There are weapons that are significantly better than others. Excellent sharp weapons like Katana swords and Wakizashi blades usually yield high damage levels. Adding mods to these weapons make them even more powerful. Certain blunt weapons like the Morning Star are more brutal than an ordinary baseball bat so in that respect it is a better weapon.
One handed weapons like the Wakizashi (sharp) and the Morning Star (blunt/sharp) are the best kinds of weapons because they yield high damage levels and are also one-handed which is significantly less of a drain on your stamina. You can swing a one-handed weapons 10-14 times versus a two-handed which you may only get 6-8 swings. In a large crowd those extra swings may help save your life.
As your levels increase so do the powers of the weapon. A Level 30 machete will likely do more damage than a Level 10 machete. If you remained at Level 30 for the duration of a single game playthrough the weapons damage levels still increases as you get further in the game little by little. A single weapon will not increase on it's own but a machete found in the beginning of the game will definitely not be as strong as one found much later in the game. The higher you build your player level the more the weapons damages increase with you.
When it comes to the prefixes like "feeble", "weak", or "used" it usually means the durability of the weapon is low. When you see an item with names like "Dependable", "Diabolical", or "Deadly" it means that the durability or damage of the weapon is much higher than the average weapons. The durability is how many times the weapon can hit an enemy before it becomes useless. You'll notice that a Weak Sickle may only have a durability of 28 while an Indestructible Sickle will have a durability level of about 56. It's significantly more. Not to mention this is where certain unlocked skills can help. Some characters have skills which will allow for weapons to deteriorate at a much slower rate. This allows you to use a great weapon even longer.
Any time is a good time to upgrade your best weapons. Upgrading weapons you don't plan on keeping for long isn't worth the time or money. Keep searching the weapon chests to find weapons that are colored Green, Blue, or Purple. Those are the better ones. Gold is the best. Why not get the maximum out of your best weapons?

off topic for a sec....I'm at lvl 36 now, is it ok to go to the prison or should I finish more quests bc it says you can't go back to island. But can you go back after you finish game?
If you go to the prison , you cant leave until you finish the main game and then after that, you can do the story over with a knew charcater or continue with your current one with lv, weapons and xp carried on

Later in the game when you start finding higher level sharps though it pretty much evens out, damage-wise anyway, the difference between a lvl 60 zed's demise and a lvl 60 blunt speaker is tangible, but relatively inconsequential when being used against infected, walkers, and butchers. It only becomes an issue when dealing with higher HP enemies such as thugs, rams or floaters, suiciders are easy to take out as you can throw weapons or just run by them as fast as ya can lol
PS- this difference is with sam b's damage skills put all the way up

Another fun and cool thing to do with Sam B, fill up your inventory with weapons and such ,so that if you hold pickup it will switch your weapon out with what is on the ground, then find a chest and open it. DO NOT PICK UP THE ITEM IN THE CHEST. Use your Fury mode and now hold square or X to pickup whatever is in the chest, you should find your brass knuckles on the ground. Infinite stamina, durability, and they are the best in the game. works with xian mei's knife as well. the other two's suck and Ryder's is ok.
